Meet Copter: Turning English Vocabulary into a Neon Space Battle

What happens when a student is asked to build an educational game in a single eight-hour challenge?

For Copter, a 20-year-old student at Khon Kaen Technical College (KKTC), the answer was not a worksheet, a quiz page, or a familiar flashcard exercise. It was a neon space battle filled with enemy ships, laser fire, upgrades, and English vocabulary.

The result was Star Speller 2D, the first submission to the Reading Advantage LLM-First Game Competition. It is a bold prototype that shows how quickly a clear learning objective can become something energetic, visual, and unmistakably personal.

Vocabulary at the Center of the Action

Star Speller 2D starts with a simple educational idea: show the player a Thai meaning and ask them to identify the matching English word. Copter then wraps that learning loop inside the language of an arcade space shooter.

Three targets appear on screen with English labels. The player must recognize the correct term while navigating a field of enemy fire. A correct choice advances the battle, while the surrounding action keeps the learner alert and engaged.

That combination matters. Vocabulary is not placed in a separate menu before or after the game. It becomes the reason for every decision the player makes.

A Strong Visual Identity

In its darker Riven Lands presentation, a Thai clue guides the action while the choices DOCTOR, TEACHER, and POLICE sit beneath three enemy ships. Lasers cross the battlefield, shields absorb damage, and the player's ship prepares for the next move.

Copter also designed a brighter alternate presentation, giving the same educational structure two different moods. That willingness to think about theme, player choice, and replay value helped Star Speller 2D feel larger than a basic contest exercise.

The prototype includes ideas such as:

  • boss encounters and enemy waves;
  • a shield and damage system;
  • upgrade choices that change the player's attack;
  • alternate ships and visual themes;
  • Thai prompts paired with readable English targets.

Each feature reinforces the feeling that the learner is progressing through an adventure rather than simply answering isolated questions.

Building with Ambition

An eight-hour competition forces creators to make decisions quickly. Copter chose ambition: multiple levels, escalating enemies, visual effects, and a complete arcade concept built around vocabulary recognition.

The most impressive part is not any single laser or enemy. It is the way the submission connects an academic task to a genre young players already understand. See a clue. Read the options. Choose a target. Act immediately.

That is learning design expressed through gameplay.

A Glimpse of What Students Can Create

Star Speller 2D is a prototype, but it represents something important for Thai technical education. Students do not need to wait until they are senior developers to experiment with game systems, user experience, and educational technology. With a strong idea, modern tools, and the courage to build, they can create something memorable now.

Copter's submission brought color, motion, and personality to the competition from the very first entry. It also gave us a vivid example of what becomes possible when students are invited not just to use educational technology, but to invent it.

At Reading Advantage, we believe that active creation is one of the most powerful ways to learn. Star Speller 2D is exactly the kind of student-led imagination we want to encourage: playful, ambitious, and grounded in a real learning goal.
